Despite Michael Owen’s brilliant form, the Reds were unable to mount a title challenge and eventually finished 7th with Houllier taking sole charge in November. The season would be McManaman’s last at Anfield before his move to Real Madrid as poor form blighted his 1998-99 campaign, but the tricky winger is long remembered as a Reds icon with 66 goals in 364 games
